TSMC in September to begin the construction of new solar battery factory

The world’s largest foundry TSMC has announced on the last Saturday to initiate the construction of the thin solar cells plant this September.

TSMC Rick Tsai said the new plant focuses on the development of CIGS thin solar modules, this is another big move after bought 20% stake of Taiwan’s largest Solar manufacturing company Motech in January this year. Motech has been the world’s sixth biggest solar cells manufacturers in 2007.

This Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has provided a standard for wireless mobile devices Chargers finished. Ford is using the Internet and wireless technology to accelerate testing and refinement of the advanced lithium-ion battery systems that will power its upcoming plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.

Sanyo Electric and GS Yuasa said Friday they will liquidate their lithium ion battery joint venture, in the face of intensifying price competition with South Korean players.

The Kyoto-based joint venture, called Sanyo GS Soft Energy, is 51% owned by Sanyo with GS Yuasa holding the remainder. It will terminate business by the end of February 2011 and then be liquidated in March 2111.

The liquidation of Sanyo GS Soft Energy Co. may make Sanyo Electric unable to collect loans worth 4 billion yen. GS Yuasa will book a special loss of about 3 billion yen for the year ending March 2011.

Taiwan and China mainland companies plan to joint venture to produce bus batteries

Pihsiang Machinery Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a Taiwan company which is primarily an electric scooter maker, said Thursday it intends to take a 15 percent stake in the joint venture with Foshan Electrical and Lighting Co. (FEL) of China and to provide the technology and materials for the manufacture of LPF bus batteries.

Under the terms of a letter of intent signed between the two companies, the battery factory will be set up in China, in Foshan, Guangdong Province, Pihsiang deputy spokesman More Huang said.

The preliminary plan is to manufacture 15 million batteries for supply to FEL in the first year of the project, he said. FEL is primarily a lighting equipment maker, but in the last two years it has acquired three bus manufacturing plants in China.

Huang said FEL plans to expand its annual bus production capacity to 2,000 units by 2015, by which time it will require 100 million LPF batteries per year. FEL was impressed by Pihsiang’s battery production technology after it tested the batteries in its buses in April.

Boston-Power Provides Battery System for NASA’s Humanoid Robot Project

Boston-Power announced that its award-winning Swing battery(CGR-D14S Battery) system has been selected by NASA for Project M to land a humanoid robot on the moon.

The company said it would deliver a 2.5-kilowatt energy storage system, along with an integrated battery management system. The batteries would provide power for the robot, known as Robonaut 2 or R2, according to Boston-Power. The proposed project, dubbed Project M, seeks to land the robot on the moon in 1,000 days. R2 was developed jointly by NASA and General Motors and could support astronauts working in dangerous environments and on repetitive tasks. The robot is capable of performing a wide range of human skills and motions, and is the second generation of humanoid robots created for space travel.

As part of the initiative, Boston-Power and NASA have reached an agreement to develop an advanced, environmentally sustainable lithium ion battery pack capable of being mass-produced for NASA performance and proof-of-concept testing activities, according to Boston-Power.

The company’s batteries are currently being used in some HP laptops, while ASUS has announced it would use Boston-Power batteries as the standard battery packs in the B Series.

The packs will be tested at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston for possible integration into an advanced space vehicle as part of the Lunar Lander project, Boston-Power said.
