Liquidware Showcases Amber Tablet, a Development Device With Strong Customization

If you’re the kind of guy who likes to take apart tablets and mod the hell out of them, then the video below is pure tech pron for you. Meet the Amber tablet, that was recently showcased by Liquidware and it goes for a pretty hefty amount, $1,674.

Amber is “80% of the way to a tablet” and it features a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPU, 7 inch capacitive screen and a customized version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. There’s no casing to speak of, so all the “guts” are in plain sight. The huge price is caused by the fact that this a development kit, so it’s NOT for end users. It’s used for prototyping by developers and it comes with 2 USB ports, 1 USB OTG and GPIO, I2C, serial and ADC hard connections. Lots of connectors mean that you can try various combos of components, creating an even stronger device.

On the DIY scene this is pure gold, but the price is pretty big. Just look at the Raspberry, it had the cheapest configuration and it supported an extra component or two, but in the range of $200 or so, not $800, the starting price of Amber. What do you say about this price?

ASUS PadFone Preview – We Analyze the Prototype With Quick Glance

We’ve finally received the ASUS PadFone prototype for testing, a hybrid device that we’ve been waiting for anxiously. The 4.3 inch handset made by ASUS is the brain of the 10.1 inch slate, as you probably know already. The combo is only available as a phone + tablet association and the rumored price is 699 euros.

There’s also a keyboard dock rumored to cost 149 euros. Anyway, the ASUS Padfone made a nice impression here at Tablet News, especially thanks to the fact that it’s very light, it’s got a beautiful facade and a metallic edge. There’s a Super AMOLED 4.3 inch display with a 540 x 960 pixel resolution, an 8 megapixel camera at the back and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual core 1.5 GHz processor. PadFone measures 9.2 mm in thickness, weighs 129 grams and features 16/32GB of storage and 1GB of RAM.

There’s also WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth and microUSB. As you can see the phone has two side ports and a special metallic contact that helps it become integrated into the PadFone Station tablet. The tablet has two prongs and a metallic contact that attach to the phone that slides into the tablet easily. The slate has two holes for the camera, one for the sensor, one for the flash. In just seconds after the phone insertion into the tablet it’ll enter functioning mode, the usual Android 4.0 interface you’ve already seen on the Pad 300 here at Tablet News. It’s a great hybrid device, that we’re going to test and review in the following days!

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 Gets Android 4.0 ICS Fix

It appears that the Android 4.0 ICS update for the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101 tablet brought not only new features, but also new bugs, since now ASUS had to push a fix for those. They also added Face Unlock with the new update and improved the email and System Bar Unlock.

The update version is 9.2.1.24 and it’s available via Over the Air. It appears that ASUS tried 4 times to fix the problems of its first update and let’s hope that this is the last time they need to push a fix. If you own the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101, try the latest Android 4.0 fix and tell us if your problems are solved. I have to say that ever since the first Android version launched, Android 4.0 has been the version that was hardest to update on devices and it gave users the most problems, when provided incorrectly.

Let’s hope that the wave of Android 4.0 updates coming to Samsung tablets won’t have to face such problems… if only they came faster. Any other tablet owners here with problems caused by ICS?
